Eight months ago, a 49-year-old, 6'4 tall english man with a strong physique walked into my clinic. When I first looked at him, I thought he must have come in by mistake. But he was in severe back and shoulder pain. From the very first day, I sensed there was more going on than just physical symptoms.
He told me he had been off work for a month. He had been working in the same company for more than 30 years, and due to repetitive tasks, his pain had become unbearable. I planned lighter duties for him, but day by day his condition kept worsening. I spoke with his manager and tried all the best treatment options, but nothing seemed to work.
One day, he suddenly burst into tears. He told me his wife had left him after 30 years of marriage. He said he wanted her to be happy and to live the life she deserved. He shared that they had both dreamed of owning a house by the sea since they were in school, and he wanted to hold her hand until his last breath. He cried uncontrollably, repeating, I love her. I want her back. I just have her in my life. I had never seen a man express such a deep love. He also said that he tried to end his life, and I felt helpless in that moment.
My role was to refer him to a psychologist, which I had done long ago, but he said nothing was helping. He told me, Gayatree, you are the only one I can talk to. You are powerful and I have heard Indian gods are powerful too, they will listen to your prayers. Please pray that my wife comes back. I laughed and said, if there is any god, then all gods are powerful. I told him I would pray for his peace. For the first time, I saw a little hope in his eyes.
I don’t know why, but I suddenly felt he must enjoy riding motorbikes.
So I asked - "Do you ride a bike?"
His eyes lit up instantly.
He said - "I used to but not riding anymore and How do you know?"
I laughed and said, an Indian god told me.
I encouraged him to explore things he had stopped doing. I told him to find a motorbike that suits your personality and ride. Life is beautiful, you also deserve the life you dreamed of.
For a week, we talked about his hobbies. Slowly he began rediscovering himself.
After few days, when I opened my emails, I saw a photo of his new posh sports bike.
He wrote, “Gayatree, you and your god are powerful. I feel free. I rode 120 miles of true freedom."
He came to the clinic smiling and said, "You helped me, you are like my sister."
Then he joked, if you ever need a bodyguard, I am here.
He also said he plans to start playing rugby again. He is finally free—free from pain, free from stress, and free from the boundaries he had unknowingly created around himself.
His wife has not returned yet, but life is guiding him towards peace. I will discharge him. I know he is not in pain anymore.
Physiotherapy is not just about relieving pain or treating injuries. It’s about people—their journeys, their faith, and their emotions.
